Population inches up on Gulf beaches
The population of the Pinellas County Gulf beach barrier islands
appears to be inching upward, according to the federal government.
However, not every town is gaining new residents.
Census Bureau estimates found that
36,327 persons resided in the 10 municipalities of the barrier islands
from Belleair Beach in the north to St. Pete Beach in the south in
2005. That was an increase of 212 over the 2004. The numbers are the
latest compiled by the federal agency, which uses a variety of records
to estimate population shifts between official census years.
Six towns gained population: Indian Rocks Beach,
Indian Shores, Madeira Beach, Redington Beach, Redington Shores and
St. Pete Beach. Four lost population: Belleair Beach, Belleair Shore,
North Redington Beach and Treasure Island.
Belleair Beach suffered the biggest
population dip, down by 7.5 percent from 1,751 in 2004 to 1,619 in
2005. The biggest gainer was Redington Shores, up 5.4 percent to
2,231.
