Dining ventures may
signal beach boom
Several new food and drink ventures have opened and soon will open on
the Pinellas County Gulf beach barrier islands, just in time for the
start of the new visitor season.
New to beach neighborhoods are the
long-awaited Madeleina Cottage in St. Pete Beach, Indian
Shores Coffee Company, and the Beach Gourmet and the Gulf View Food
Factory in North Redington Beach. Here's the direction in
which restaurants, and food and drink establishments are moving along the barrier
islands, a
possible indication of the resilience of the local economy.
Indian Rocks Beach: The Tacky Turtle has
been given a colorful facelift and a new name -- the Kooky Coconut.
Indian Shores: The Indian
Shores Coffee Company has opened on the site of
the short-lived Cafe Soho restaurant on Gulf Boulevard. The old Mickey Quinn's
site has been put on the property sales market.
North Redington Beach: Beach Gourmet has
opened a self-service eatery at 171st Avenue, just off Gulf Boulevard,
where Capone's pizzeria had planned to open, but never did. The Gulf
View Food Factory has opened at the Sandalwood on Gulf Boulevard.
Madeira Beach: The Amish Creamery, a
specialty grocery store, has opened at Madeira Way and Tom Stuart
Causeway. Angry Pepper Smoke Shack and Grill has opened on Duhme Road.
The Candy Kitchen is staying put -- dropping plans to move up Gulf
Boulevard. However, the Bamboo Beer Garden has closed after some 60
years at John's Pass. Jungle Island has been sold and is to reopen as
Parrot Bay Bar and Grill. The New York Deli Restaurant site
remains empty.
Redington Shores: The Shore
Delicatessen has opened on the Gulf Boulevard site of Cecilia's, which
closed in late summer.
St. Pete Beach: The Frog Pond has
opened another restaurant at Gulf Boulevard and Corey Avenue. And, the
long-awaited Madeleina's Cottage restaurant has opened for dinner
Monday through Saturday and all-day on Sunday with an upscale menu
featuring English food.
